International Tourism in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand ‘Where Adventure meets Spirituality’

International tourism in Uttarakhand is a discipline that awaits the much needed attention to prosper. Not even a percent of India’s foreign tourists visit Uttaranchal annually, though the number is slowly increasing but, it’s not enough in comparison to the potential the State holds. Uttarakhand provides the superb combination of Adventure while attaining Spirituality that the foreign tourists wouldn’t want to miss out on, but they do because of the dearth of infrastructure and transport facilities.

Current Scenario

Domestic tourists comprise 98% of the total tourists that come to the State, primarily because of the Char Dhams, Haridwar, Rishikesh and Corbett National Park. Even the valley of flowers laments on the decline in the number of tourists, year by year. The tourism industry in Uttarakhand has now been accorded the status of ‘thrust sector’ and the government is adopting measures for its development especially for international tourism in Uttarakhand. One of the noticeable developments is the participation of Uttarakhand in the 2011 ITB Berlin Tourism Fair to promote inflow of international tourists. Uttarakhand has a great scope for adventure, spiritual and ecotourism.

Why foreign tourists must visit Uttarakhand?

  • Most foreign tourists are the audacious sort and Uttarakhand is fraught with opportunities for the same such as white water rafting, mountaineering, ice skiing, canoeing & kayaking, trekking etc.
  • Wildlife enthusiast can visit the sanctuaries and national parks, most famous being ‘Corbett National Park’ and ‘Rajaji National Park’.
  • Spirituality is best offered in the state with its ‘Char Dhams’ and the dips in holy rivers of Ganga and Yamuna.
  • Taste the local flavour that isn’t offered on the menu in all of India i.e the cuisine of Garhwal and Kumaon.
