Understand Basic Nutrients before Cooking

Nutrition is the relationship of food to the health of the human body.Good Nutriton is essential for normal organ development and functioning, for normal reproduction,for growth,for maintenance, for optimium activity level and working efficiency, for resistance to infection and disease, and for ability to repair bodily damage or injury.

Proper Nutrition means that all the essential nutrients – Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, Minerals, Vitamins and Water are supplied and utilized in adequate balance to maintain optimal health and well being. Inadequate supplies of any of these would lead to Deficiency Diseases. Therefore every effort should be made to attain and maintain an adequate,balanced, daily intake of all those nutrients that are necessary throughout the life.

CARBOHYDRATES: Carbohydrates are the best source of energy for all bodily functions,especially the brain, central nervous system and also for muscle exertion.

PROTEINS: Protein is the most important element which is needed for the maintenance of good health and vitality and is of primary importance in growth and development of all body components.All the tissues, bones and nerves are made up of protein.

FATS: Fats or lipids, the chemical name-are the most concentrated source of energy in the diet.

VITAMINS: Vitamins are necessary for metabolic reactions in the body.

MINERALS: Another important constituent required in dietary nutrition is minerals. The body needs mineral elements for various purposes.About 4% of body weight is made up of mineral elements.

WATER: Water is the important constituent of our diet.Its importance is obvious from the fact that 75% of an infant’s body weight and 60% of an adult body weight isnothing but water. From this amount of water a loss of 15%-20% may prove to be fatal.
